Lamb Tacos with Spicy Tzatziki

The other night I was trying to decide what to make for dinner and “taco night” popped into my brain. I didn’t really want regular tacos with beef, sour cream, cheese, etc. I was craving lamb. For those of you who have never eaten or cooked with lamb, you’re really missing out. It has so much more flavor than beef and it just adds just enough of a difference to transform any meal. I’ve only cooked with lamb one other time, for this Indian Pizza recipe, but I’ve been trying all the lamb options at restaurants around town and it is definitely my new favorite. So back to the tacos. I was thinking a lamb taco would be nice and tzatziki (a yogurt based sauce) could replace the sour cream aspect of the tacos. This was a great change up to our regular taco nights and I know it’ll be in the rotation a lot!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 18 oz Greek yogurt (plain)
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 cucumber, seeded and chopped
  • 2 teaspoon Sriracha sauce (depending on how spicy you like it)
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • Corn or flour tortillas
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 lb of ground lamb
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Chopped mint
  • Feta

Make the tzatziki sauce first (even a day ahead if you’d like). Peel your cucumbers and remove the seeds with a spoon. Slice them in half and lay them between paper towels to make sure you’ve removed as much liquid as possible.

Once the cucumbers are patted dry, chop them into small pieces.

In a small bowl, combine the yogurt, garlic, cucumber, sriracha and lemon juice.

Throw it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve your tacos. Now, on to the lamb. It’s a little pricey compared to its beef counterpart, but shouldn’t break the bank if you make it every so often.

In a medium to large skillet, heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil over medium heat. Saute garlic and ginger (I was too lazy for ginger but I’m sure it’d be a nice touch).

After a minute or two when the garlic is nice and fragrant (aka – making you and your loved ones SO hungry), add the ground lamb.

And cumin.

Now just cook the lamb until it’s nice and brown.

At this point, you can stir in your mint if you have any.

Confession time: I was thinking oh, wouldn’t it be great if these “tacos” were served on naan instead of tortillas? So that’s what we did. And it wasn’t great. The naan does not hold up well. It tears and breaks and spills your taco stuff all over the place. So for the rest of the recipe, please pretend that I used regular ole’ tortillas and that this didn’t happen.

To serve, spread a TORTILLA (or pita) with the tzatziki.

Add the ground lamb.

And top with feta, more tzatziki sauce, or even more sriracha.

And it’s ready to go – just fold and eat.
